House Academics

The Phi Beta Epsilon view on academics is simple--the individual's success is the group's goal.Though MIT students come from all over the world, they all come to the Institute for one reason: to work with the brightest minds and get the highest quality education. At PBE, we are no exception. As a house, we are academically diverse and represent over 15 majors (including the rare, Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences buff). Through our dedication to academic excellence, we have formed a house that knows how to get the most from an MIT education.

Brothers at an academic award ceremony

The Methods:

Academic success comes in many forms--good grades, academic awards, or admission in nationally ranked graduate schools. We understand that every student comes to school with his own unique views of scholastic achievement, and our philosophy is to foster that. We do not enforce a "minimum house GPA", nor do we force students who would rather not focus on school to do so. Instead, each brother takes it upon himself to let the brotherhood know what he wants to get out of his MIT education, and the rest of the brotherhood responds by supporting him in getting there.

The Results:

Our dedication to academics can be seen in our current brotherhood as well as in our alumni. You can find Phi Betes in every aspect of academic life--from top graduate schools, to honorary academic societies; from scientific journals, to the TA's desk.

In recent MIT InterFraternity Counsel rankings, PBE has ranked as high as 2nd overall amongst the 26 fraternities for house GPA. Many of our brothers are published first authors, and one even published 5 papers his freshman year alone. Recent brothers have marked their attendance in such honorary academic fraternities such as Tau Beta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa. In short, we're no slouches!

Over the last 5 years, alumni of the house have gone on to exemplify the success that the brotherhood instills in each of us as well. In the world of finance and consulting, we have had brothers tender offers from firms such as Blackstone Group, Jane Street Capital, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Booz Allen Hamilton, Bain & Company, and the Monitor Group. In the world of computing, graduates have gone on to work at Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, and Cisco Systems.

Brothers have also gone on to top Medical and Graduate colleges too. In the last 4 years, 3 brothers have gained admission at Harvard Medical School, and brothers have also attended top medical schools such as University of California San Francisco, and Northwestern. Brothers attending graduate school outside of MIT have gotten seats in top schools such as UC Berkeley and Stanford.
